Chris Pittenger is best known for his outstanding work with Rhone varieties for Skinner Vineyards (Sierra Foothills). Gros Ventre is Pittenger's personal label with his wife, Sarah, under which they make five Pinot Noirs from some of the most interesting (and prestigious) sites in the Sonoma Coast, Anderson Valley, and Russian River Valley appellations. Baranoff is a 3 acre vineyard overlooking the Laguna de Santa Rosa, planted to seven different Pinot Noir clones (Calera, Swan, 113, 115, 459, 667, 777). on red sandy clay loam soils in 2001. We were struck by the complexity and texture of the 2011 (all seven clones are used) and are happy to report that the 2012 vintage is just as delicious! It is generous and balanced, with warm aromas of roses, cinnamon sticks, funky purple plums and skins and a spicy, exuberant palate of rich red berries, black cherry, nettles, sage, sandalwood, and citrus oils. Pinot Noir pairs well with salmon or tuna and meaty white fish, lean red meats, duck, turkey, and fresh herbs like rosemary and thyme. It is also a great choice for the Thanksgiving table.
